It is not a closet or storeroom, so do not try to fit everything in it. Here are few advices on making your small-size living room to be a cozy one.
1. Decide the theme of the room and what you would want yourself and your guests to be able to do in the room.
Limit your furniture selection to the ones you really need. Keep things simple and keep it to the basics. For example, if you wish to chat with friends while sitting on a comfy sofa and watching movies/NFL games, put one medium or large three-seated sofa and a coffee table along with a flat television. If only there is enough space, you may add credenza and angle desk.
2. Furniture selection is important. Do not go for oversized furniture.
Do not also use large couch because the couch is too big and it will make the space become narrow and congested. Instead, keep things to its function and try to find modern, contemporary furniture with minimum details. Make sure that there is space in between the furniture to ensure you can walk around effortlessly. If three-seated sofa is too large, you may opt for two-seater one and add another smaller chair such as reclining chair near the TV set. This would also create a conversation area for you and your guests.
3. Organize things wherever possible.
Since you would need to make the most of your residential dwelling, ensuring that everything has their own place and well-organized, you can maximize your living room furniture. For example, you can get a coffee table that has storage compartment beneath, or you could install wall-mount racks to store books, DVDs and music CDs, to name a few.
4. Improvise.
To create a slightly different style, you may try to use two different sofas or a combination of sofa and chair. The difference here could mean different shapes, different designs, or color differences. To match the different furniture, you could place sofa cushions that have matching colors with the chair or the other way around. This would add color and style to the living room. Improvise to make the whole arrangement goes in harmony.
5. Try to have larger living room by incorporating your living room with other area in the house.
Open floor interior area would work superbly well in small-size residential dwelling. Thus, you should consider combining your living room with the kitchen, for example. Some homeowners separate their living room and the kitchen by using countertop and install see-through thick interior glass up to the ceiling to give guests a sense of width while preventing smoke and smells from the kitchen enter the living area deliberately. Additionally, you could place one medium-size rug beneath your living room furniture arrangement to add coziness and warmth to your living room.
You can paint the walls in natural, light color such as beige to give a sense of width inside. Make your small-size living room cozy, comfortable and live-able by doing proper planning and arrangement without having to burn your home improvement budget.
